German action house Breker have sold one of Apple’s first computers, a functional 1976 model, for a record 516,000 euros ($668,000)
An anonymous Asian client bought the Apple I which the tech company’s founders Seven Jobs and Steve Wozniak build in a family garage.
Breker said it is one of only six known functional models left in the world and that this specific unit has Woziak’s signature, old business transaction letters from Jobs and an original owner’s manual.
The Apple I went on sale in July 1976 at a price $666.66 and about 200 units were produced. This included a blank printer circuit board, parts kit and a 16-page manual, but to get it to work you still had to get a case, power supply, keyboard, storage system, and display.
In April 1977 the price was dropped to $475. The Apple I continued to be sold through 1977 after the introduction of the Apple II in April 1977. The Apple I was officially discontinued by October 1977. As Wozniak was the only person who could answer customer support questions about the Apple, the company offered a discount for trading their Apple I for an Apple II to persuade them to return their Apple I’s, contributing to the computers scarcity.
